Everybody Wins! USA Network Mourns The Passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy

The network of Everybody Wins! USA affiliates and partners mourned the passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy this past week. Senator Kennedy's work impacted millions of lives, but none greater than the children he read to one-on-one each week for nearly a decade at Brent Elementary School in Washington, D.C. through Everybody Wins! DC.

As one individual so aptly wrote on their blog, "Every Tuesday at lunch, he volunteered to read with a Washington DC public school student through the Everybody Wins program. To many, no doubt, this was small in comparison to the major accomplishments in his life, but to me, it revealed the heart of a man who not only saw the big picture, but realized that it is the small everyday ways we each give of ourselves that can make the most tangible difference in the lives of others." The article ends with the profound statement, "If a United States Senator has one hour a week, I think I can find the time."

We know the Power Lunch experience meant a lot to Senator Kennedy also. Of reading for five years with former student, Jasmine Harrison, he said, "I get more out of reading with Jasmine than she does. I am here every Tuesday. It's a must." We're sure Senator Kennedy must have been pleased to learn last year that Jasmine is now a freshman in college studying education!

Senator Kennedy's service with Everybody Wins! was featured in many of the tributes to him, including stories on the CBS Evening News, PBS News Hour, ABC 7 News, The Washington Post and Peoria Journal Star,  And if you haven't seen it, Senator Kennedy's service with Everybody Wins! was featured in the video tribute to him at the 2008 Democratic Convention.

Senator Kennedy embodied the Everybody Wins! mantra of "one mentor, one child, one book at a time." His presence will be missed but his legacy of service will live with us forever. If you'd like to read more about Senator Kennedy, please visit tedkennedy.org
