Clover Street School Sends Valentines to the
Troops
 |
Students from the Power Lunch program at Clover Street
Elementary School in Windsor learned the real power of words. Along with their
ALSTOM Power volunteer reading mentors, Clover Street students made Valentine
Day cards to send to our men and women serving in the military.
|
During lunchtime, the students and their volunteer reading
mentors used construction paper, stickers, and ribbons, cut out hearts of all shapes
and colors, and wrote special messages to show their respect and give support to our
troops.
Everybody joined in the fun! Anthony
Jackson, school coordinator of the Power
Lunch Program at Clover Street School, provided direction and purchased the materials
for the projects. Volunteers from ALSTOM Power brought small American flags to use.
Even Clover Street staff joined in! One teacher mentioned that she was a
Blue Star Mom (a mom who has a child serving in the military). She spoke to the third
graders about how lonely and homesick our fighting troops are, and she explained
to the students how much their cards and letters would help their morale.
Everybody involved in the project was a winner! Students, ALSTOM
Power volunteers and Clover Street staff learned the power of working together and
reaching out to others. And everybody learned the power of the written word.
So, remember, reading is not only about books. When you read (or write) with a child
everybody wins!
